When you want to listen to music in the privacy and comfort of your home, there are many options that can maximize your space, comfort and music. As of late (late being the past ten years or so) the current craze for teens and the elderly alike, are one-unit shelf systems. These little wonders not only pump out the music with undeniable power, but also are small enough that you won’t have to take down pictures of you and your boyfriend to make room. Here is a brief guide to the hottest shelf system stereos, and what to consider when purchasing a new compact stereo.

When purchasing a new shelf stereo system, it is important to keep in mind that not only are not all brands created equally, but most shelf systems feature options that are unique to the units themselves. Two major things to look at when purchasing a new shelf system are watts (the amount of power that the unit supplies to the speakers, much like the amount of power that Brad Pitt exudes in every major film) and CD or multiple CD capability. Generally the more watts that a shelf system has the louder, more crisp, and powerful the music that you are blasting will sound. Although you may think you don’t need a lot of watts for you Barbara Streisand or Elton John albums, there is only one way to hear Benny and the Jets, and that is loud, clear and proud. The ability to have multiple albums cycling is the other important factor and should come into play when choosing a system. Some systems let you cycle through as many as five CDs, and some newer models even offer MP3 playback, allowing for hours and hours of Celion Dion (my idea of heaven).

All in all buying a new shelf system isn’t brain surgery (or any other kind of surgery for that matter) and just using common sense will most likely guide you straight (!) and true. Just keep in mind that as is the case with most electronics, certain brands are more renown for their stereos and although it may be tempting, it is probably not advantageous to purchase the lowest priced system.
