All right, usually when I write these “how to buy” pages I have to do some extensive research (wink, wink) and end up spending hours looking for exactly what constitutes a good…whatever. This category, however, is not the most inherently difficult thing to write about. Most boomboxes are not really that different. They have two speakers, and controls that let you select which radio station, tape or CD you want to listen to and that’s about it. Even I, Philip P Daniel the king of all things goofy and convoluted, am having a hard time coming up with much advice to tell you, or many specifications to look for (or even Star Trek references…I mean how many episodes saw Captain Kirk blasting Tone Loc while C walking across an alien planet?). Below is what I have decided makes a good boom box. If you think differently…whatever.
1. Decide what features you want. This will help you narrow your search down
quickly, and even though most units come equipped with a CD (or even MP3) player,
you can still find only radios or cassette players if you really want.
2. Decide if you are going to take it with you. If you want to cart your box
around with you on your shoulder, you will need a unit that can not only run
off of batteries, but also has good battery life.
3. Look how big the speakers are and if they feature any sort of bass boosting
technology. One of the main factors that make boomboxes so awesome is the boom!
Without the bass, a boom box is just an annoying squeaking box that will make
you look like a fool in front of your original gansta friends.
4. Make sure you check out the warranty. Boomboxes are prone to breakage, and if you think that you are going to be on the go with your unit, make sure to check out how long the warranty will cover your asset.
All in all, there is not much thinking involved in buying a new boombox. Just make sure to hear how it sounds and read reviews on the model you are interested in.
