Cameras and Photography

At Newbie.net, we know that photography can be a hard area to get started in. With all of the different options available, it can be daunting to try and pick which of the hundred of cameras is right for you. Now with the invent of digital cameras, and the subsequent craze involved, figuring out what is camera is the right camera can be harder then ever.

Luckily for you, you have come to the right place to learn and understand what type, brand and specifications will make your pictures come to life.

Digital Vs. Film

Since this seems to be the biggest issue involved in buying cameras today, it is the best place to start. There are many pros and cons to both sides, and below are points for each.

Choose Digital!

1. Digital cameras can store enormous amounts of pictures on both internal memory cards and expandable cards. This allows you to snap away as many pictures as you want without having to worry about processing.

2. Pictures taken can be deleted in a blink of an eye. All (or most) digital cameras have a built in LCD screen that shows you what you are taking and how it will look instantly. If you don't like how you look in a shot, it's gone quicker then you can say poof!

3. Pictures can be uploaded to your computer with ease. This is handy for making slide shows and storing the hundreds of pictures that you will take with a digital camera. Once on your computer, the pictures can then be uploaded onto web sites or e-mailed to friends and relatives with any e-mail program. Pictures can also be cropped and edited with programs, allowing you to finally get that picture with your favorite athlete or celebrity!

4. Most newer models can also shoot short movies, much like a camcorder, that can be shown on the cameras LCD screen or computer. This can be handy for really special occasions, but is a function that is rarely used. 5. Digital cameras are small and getting smaller. Soon you will be able to swallow a digital camera so be careful!

6. The quality is increasing exponentially. Each jump in Mega-Pixels results in quality that is better and better, allowing for finer details and better quality pictures.

7. Digital Cameras have cool feature like night vision that let you take pictures without a flash.

Choose Film!

1. Of course the most obvious advantage of film is the ability to take your shots down to the local store and get prints in a no time. Recently, technology has been allowing you to take in memory cards to some stores and get digital camera shots printed, but it is costly and the quality is not always as good.

2. For the true photographer, it is hard to find the top end equipment, such as special lenses, for digital cameras without paying copious amounts of money. Prices may go down in the near future, but some tricks may still be impossible with digital cameras. If you are looking to do things like overexposure, time lapse, and other tricks involving shutters, then it may be difficult if not impossible to get the shot you are looking for on a digital camera.

3. Digital cameras have a tendency to eat batteries at a rather high rate. Although this has gotten better, there is nothing worse then running out of batteries when you are about to take that perfect shot. Most batteries for film cameras last for days, while digital cameras may have to be charged as much as every two or three hours.

4. Quality is usually not an issue with even the lowest film camera. You might have to pay as much as $300 to get a digital camera that doesn't appear grainy.

5. Price. That is all that should be said. Although digital cameras are constantly coming down in price, to get one that compares in quality will cost you a decent chunk. (To compare with film you should get a camera that is at least 3.2 mega-pixels or higher)

So with all the obvious pros and cons, what should someone new to the world of photograph do? You just have to decide what you want to do. If you want to take tons of pictures…get a digital camera. If you want easy access to quality prints…get a film camera. If you want to take movies and put your pictures on the internet…get a digital camera. If you want to do professional photography or camera tricks…get film.
